Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A DOULA?

A Birth Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, informational support and advocacy to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her have a healthy birth experience. There are also Postpartum Doulas, that assist with providing care to new mothers immediately after childbirth. This assistance of a Postpartum Doula varies from doula to doula, but typically consists of  light house keeping, breastfeeding assistance, newborn care, and light meal preparation.

NOTE: There is a common mix up between doulas and midwives. Doulas provide non medical support during labor and delivery, while midwives are trained to provide medical care to mom & baby. Midwives deliver your baby. Doulas are your “coach” throughout pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A DOULA DURING PREGNANCY, LABOR AND BIRTH?

  • Having the presence of someone that understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman

  • Someone to provide continuously support of the mother throughout labor

  • A source of emotional support, physical comfort measures, and assistance with getting the mother information she needs to make informed decisions

  • A non bias party to facilitate communication between the birthing person, her partner and clinical care providers

AT WHAT POINT IN MY PREGNANCY SHOULD I HIRE A DOULA?

The earlier you hire a doula, the more time you have to build a relationship with your doula, ask questions, and gain information. We prefer to be contacted around 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you are further along in your pregnancy, reach out to your preferred doula as soon as possible to ensure she can accommodate your due date.

We require a non-refundable deposit of half of your service fee when you choose to book with us. We do offer customizable payment plans as well! If you have an FSA/HSA account, check with your provider to see if you can be reimbursed for doula care.
